Stablecoins on XRP Ledger Pass $1 Billion — But RLUSD Is Doing Most of the Heavy Lifting
The value of stablecoins issued on the XRP Ledger has climbed above $1 billion, with RLUSD accounting for the overwhelming majority. The milestone strengthens XRPL's emerging stablecoin ecosystem, but it also raises a useful question: how diversified is that growth?

A billion dollars on a blockchain sounds impressive, but the number becomes more useful when you ask the accountant's question: what's actually in the balance?
Stablecoins issued on the XRP Ledger reached approximately $1.09 billion in market value on September 7, according to RWA.xyz data cited in recent reporting. That represented growth of about 21.4% over the preceding 30 days from roughly $898 million.
The headline is significant for XRPL, but the composition tells the better story.
Ripple USD, or RLUSD, represented roughly $1.03 billion of the XRPL stablecoin total. Braza Bank's USDB was reported at approximately $26 million. In other words, XRPL has crossed the billion-dollar stablecoin threshold largely because one asset — Ripple's own RLUSD — has expanded rapidly.
That isn't necessarily a problem. It does mean the $1 billion milestone needs context.
Why stablecoins matter to XRPL
XRP was designed for transferring value, but businesses do not always want the asset being transferred to fluctuate against the currency used in their accounts.
Imagine an Australian company owing a U.S. supplier US$5 million next Friday. The company's treasury team may be interested in faster settlement, but its CFO probably does not want the US$5 million liability changing because the payment asset rose or fell 8% overnight.
A dollar stablecoin solves a different problem.
RLUSD aims to maintain a value of one U.S. dollar. That makes it easier to use for payments, settlement, collateral and financial contracts where the underlying obligation is denominated in dollars. XRP can continue to perform its native network and liquidity functions without having to pretend that one volatile asset should be used for every financial job.
Traditional finance already works this way. Companies maintain cash, term deposits, debt facilities, foreign currencies and liquid investments because each has a purpose. Nobody looks at a corporate treasury balance sheet and asks why everything isn't held in one instrument.
More holders are appearing too
The growth has not been limited to headline market value.
RWA.xyz figures cited on September 7 indicated the number of XRPL stablecoin holders had risen approximately 33.6% over the preceding 30 days to around 80,690. The same dataset showed approximately $5.28 billion of stablecoin transfer volume over 30 days.
That combination is more interesting than supply growth alone. More stablecoins exist on the ledger, more accounts hold them and more value is being transferred.
It still does not tell us exactly how much represents ordinary commercial payments.
One institution moving $100 million between its own wallets ten times could create $1 billion of reported transfer volume without $1 billion of goods or services changing hands. Transfers may include exchange movements, treasury rebalancing, market-making activity, transfers between custodians and genuine payments.
Blockchains make transaction totals highly visible. They do not automatically explain the economic purpose behind every transaction.
RLUSD dominates the picture
By September 11, separate RWA.xyz data cited in reporting put the XRPL stablecoin market at approximately $1.10 billion, with around $1.033 billion of RLUSD on the ledger.
That means the XRPL stablecoin ecosystem is currently heavily dependent on RLUSD.
There are two ways to read this.
The bullish interpretation is straightforward: Ripple has successfully created a major dollar-denominated asset that gives institutions a reason to use XRPL for something other than XRP transfers.
The cautious interpretation is that a mature stablecoin ecosystem should eventually contain several meaningful issuers and currencies. If almost the entire market consists of an asset issued by a company already closely associated with the ecosystem, it is harder to determine how much independent stablecoin demand the network has attracted.
Both can be true.
Does $1 billion of RLUSD create $1 billion of XRP demand?
No.
This is one of the easiest mistakes to make when interpreting XRPL growth.
If $100 million of RLUSD is issued on the XRP Ledger, users do not generally need to purchase $100 million of XRP first. RLUSD and XRP are different assets. The fact that both operate on the XRP Ledger does not merge their market capitalisations or economics.
XRP is used for transaction fees on XRPL, and it can be used as an intermediary asset in liquidity paths and trading markets. Greater network activity can therefore improve the environment in which XRP operates.
But the relationship is indirect.
A multinational using RLUSD on XRPL could potentially move very large dollar amounts while consuming only tiny quantities of XRP in transaction fees. For XRP demand to increase substantially, other mechanisms — liquidity provision, trading, bridging, reserves, treasury holdings or other XRP-specific use cases — would have to create that demand.
That is why network adoption and XRP valuation should not be treated as interchangeable statistics.
A more interesting milestone than the number itself
Crossing $1 billion gives XRPL a larger pool of stable dollar liquidity sitting directly on the network. That liquidity could become useful as lending, tokenised assets, decentralised exchange markets and institutional settlement infrastructure develop.
It is similar to opening a new financial district. Having $1 billion deposited in the district's banks does not guarantee that businesses will flourish, but it gives them considerably more working capital to build around than an empty banking system would.
The next question is therefore not simply whether XRPL can reach $2 billion.
Watch who owns the stablecoins, what they are doing with them, whether additional issuers gain traction, how much liquidity is available in actual markets and whether businesses begin using the assets for genuine settlement and credit.
Those figures will tell us much more about XRPL adoption than a round-number milestone on its own.
## XRP for Newbies
A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency designed to stay close to the value of another currency. RLUSD, for example, is designed to be worth approximately one U.S. dollar.
More than $1 billion worth of stablecoins are now issued on the XRP Ledger, and most of that amount is RLUSD.
Think of XRPL as a railway network. XRP and RLUSD are different kinds of cargo travelling on the same railway. More RLUSD using the railway can make the network busier and more useful, but it does not mean everyone shipping RLUSD has to buy the same dollar amount of XRP.
So this is good evidence of XRPL ecosystem growth. It is not proof that an equivalent amount of new demand has been created for XRP itself.
